The Saturday it rained, Nelson came anyway.

They had quotes from everyone. They chose Maryland Deck Builders because the owner himself drove out on a rainy Saturday morning — and twenty-seven years on, Nelson Flores still takes that first visit.

The part everyone dreads
is our part.

In Maryland a deck is a permitted structure, and most neighborhoods want HOA architectural approval on top of it. That is the reason people put this off for years. Nelson files the HOA packet and pulls the county permit himself — it is written into his reviews by name.

03 What we build

Decks are where it starts.
Not where it stops.

“Transforming your outdoor spaces with exceptional craftsmanship and quality” — their words, and after twenty-seven years the list has grown well past decking.

Custom Decks

Multi-level, elevated, wrapped around whatever the house and the slope actually give you.

Screened and Eze-Breeze Porches

An outdoor room you can still use in August and in October — screened, or glazed with Eze-Breeze panels.

Patios and Walkways

Paver patios, walkways and driveways laid to sit level and stay level.

Pavilions and Gazebos

Free-standing or built into the deck, with the timber ceiling finished properly overhead.

Outdoor Kitchens, Bars and Fire Pits

The reason people stay outside after dark — built in stone to match the patio.

Stonework and Retaining Walls

Seat walls, retaining walls and the grading that makes a sloped yard usable.

Fencing

Fenced to finish the yard, matched to the deck and the house.

Deck Restoration

When the frame is sound but the boards and railings have aged out, resurfacing beats rebuilding.

Home Additions

Where an outdoor project turns into an indoor one, the same crew carries it through.

05 The man who takes the first visit

Nelson Flores
still shows up himself.

Maryland Deck Builders has been family-owned since 1999. In a trade where most companies grow until the owner is a name on a truck, Nelson is still the one who comes out, walks the yard, works up the design with you — and then goes and files the paperwork.

His crews are named in the reviews too. Customers mention Gustavo running their project and Solomon leading the build, which is what it looks like when people stay long enough to be remembered by name.

“From beginning to end, Nelson Flores was attentive, helpful and informative. He and all the crews that worked on different aspects of the project were excellent.” Miles Hunter · Google review

08 Before you call

Questions we get
every spring.

Do I need a permit for a deck in Maryland?

Almost always, yes — a deck is a permitted structure, and many neighborhoods also require HOA architectural approval before work can start. We handle the drawings and the paperwork with your HOA and your county as part of the project, which is the part most homeowners dread.

What do you build?

Custom decks, patios, screened porches and Eze-Breeze porches, pavilions and gazebos, outdoor kitchens, bars and fire pits, walkways and driveways, stonework and retaining walls, fencing, home additions, and deck restoration and resurfacing.

Which areas do you serve?

Eight Maryland counties: Prince George's, Montgomery, Anne Arundel, Howard, Baltimore, Charles, Frederick and Carroll — including Upper Marlboro, Columbia, Laurel, Bowie, Ellicott City, Rockville, Bethesda, Silver Spring, Frederick and Towson.

How long have you been building?

Since 1999 — twenty-seven years, family-owned, with Nelson Flores still leading the design on projects himself.

Can you repair or resurface an existing deck?

Yes. Deck restoration and resurfacing is one of our services — often the right answer when the frame is sound but the surface and railings have aged out.

How do I get started?

Call us and we will come out, look at the space and talk through what is possible. Nelson works with you on the design before anything is committed.
